Botanical name: Allium schoenoprasum
Chives grow from small bulblets that form clumps of cylindrical leaves up to 30cm long. Pretty mauve flowers are carried in round heads at the end of tall stems in early summer.
The leaves have a mild onion flavour and the flowers can be used a garnish. Snip leaves into omelettes, salads, sauces and soups.
Leaves often die down in autumn.
Prefers full sun
