Turmeric has a very low GI and minimal calories.
It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
It is a good source of iron, vitamin B6, manganese, fibre, copper and potassium.
Its active ingredient, Curcurmin, is known to lower cholesterol.
Turmeric Growing Information
As a tropical plant, Turmeric performs best in moist, well-drained soil in partly shaded position protected from the midday sun.
Rhizomes can be harvested once the lower leaves turn yellow or the stems start to dry.
Carefully dig down from the side and harvest as needed, leaving the main clump in situ for up to 3-4 years.
Can be used fresh or dried and ground to a powder.
